Stage 2 Quarantine Station visit
As part of our History syllabus Stage 2 visited the Quarantine Station at Manly
Students were introduced to the concept of quarantine and the history of the site, particularly in light of the stories of newly arriving migrants to Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. Students visited a ship's cabin then followed the route taken by passengers when quarantined.
first contacts, ship travel, migration, living conditions, treatment of diseases and segregation based on class and race, and games were some of the themes explored during the day. Hands-on activities such as studying artefacts and carving inscriptions allowed for experiential learning. Building visited included the shower block, Autoclaves and Hospital.
